The software layer that creates and manages virtual machines on a physical server.
Hypervisor is Software positioned between Hardware and Virtual machines, responsible for allocating resources and isolating Virtual machines from each other. Common platforms include VMware ESXi, Proxmox VE, KVM and Hyper-V.
For service tenants, the hypervisor is usually invisible. It becomes important only in two situations: when you need to migrate a virtual machine between two different platforms (you must handle disk format and drivers), and when considering licensing costs — some commercial platforms charge based on the number of physical CPU cores.
